Dubai Clash: No Handshake, A Message Against Terrorism, and a Win Dedicated to Armed Forces
The highly anticipated India–Pakistan Asia Cup encounter in Dubai turned into more than just a cricket match. At the toss, there was no handshake between India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan’s skipper Salman Agha. The moment, captured by cameras, immediately went viral, symbolizing the underlying tensions between the two nations.
After the game, Suryakumar was not directly questioned about the absence of a handshake or the political backdrop during the post-match presentation. However, his remarks carried a powerful message. He described the victory as a “perfect return gift to India” and went on to add: “We stand by with the victims and families of the terror attack and express our solidarity. We want to dedicate today’s win to all of our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery.”
The Pakistan players chose not to speak at the presentation, maintaining silence in the face of the ongoing controversy.
The match came just months after a deadly militant attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir, which led to a four-day military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in April. India blamed Pakistan for the assault, while Pakistan denied responsibility. The escalation saw India launching air strikes inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, followed by missile retaliation from Pakistan. Dozens of lives were lost, making it one of the worst military standoffs in decades.
Given this backdrop, the Dubai encounter was never going to be just about cricket. Calls had been made to cancel the Asia Cup or boycott the fixture, yet the match went ahead under the ICC framework. For many Indian fans, the result was not merely a win on the scoreboard — it was an emotional assertion of solidarity with the victims of terrorism and a salute to the armed forces.
