Who is C.P. Radhakrishnan? From Tamil Nadu Politics to Vice President of India
Chandrapuram Ponnusami Radhakrishnan, commonly known as C.P. Radhakrishnan, is an Indian politician who in September 2025 became the 15th Vice President of India. His journey from state politics in Tamil Nadu to holding one of the highest constitutional offices reflects decades of experience, leadership, and public service.
Early Life & Political Beginnings
Born on 4 May 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan grew up in a political environment. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Early in his life, he became involved with the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and later with the political wing Jan Sangh—these were his stepping stones into mainstream politics. His early work involved grassroots activism and organizational responsibilities within Tamil Nadu.
Parliamentary & Political Milestones
Radhakrishnan’s political career expanded in the 1990s. In 1998, he was elected to the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) from Coimbatore, and re-elected in 1999. During his time as MP, he served on various parliamentary committees, notably those related to textiles, PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings), and finance. He was known for being active in legislative oversight and public policy.
In Tamil Nadu, he held leadership positions within BJP, including state president. He also undertook extensive political outreach, including a 19,000 km “Ratha Yatra” (road journey) to draw attention to issues such as river linking, the uniform civil code, and social reform.
Governorship & Path to Vice Presidency
In February 2023, he was appointed Governor of Jharkhand, marking his entry into constitutional roles. Shortly after, he was given additional charges, including Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and Governor of Telangana. By July 2024, he became the Governor of Maharashtra, a significant role given its size and diversity.
Following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in 2025, C.P. Radhakrishnan was nominated by the NDA alliance as the Vice President candidate. He won the Vice Presidential election on 9 September 2025, defeating the INDIA bloc’s candidate, and took oath as Vice President on 12 September 2025.
Significance of His Appointment
His selection is significant for several reasons:
• He becomes one of the few leaders from Tamil Nadu to hold this high constitutional office.
• His background combines both political action (legislation, activism) and constitutional responsibility (governorship), making his experience diverse.
• Public and political observers see his appointment as a continuation of BJP’s strategy of inclusive regional representation, and also a choice reflecting stability and administrative experience.
