A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenged the nationwide rollout of E20 fuel, but the Supreme Court dismissed it. The court, however, emphasized that the government must ensure transparency about vehicle compatibility and provide clear consumer information. This keeps the legal framework intact for E20 but highlights the need for better awareness among users.
Why the Controversy Matters
The dispute goes beyond one family or one policy. It raises deeper questions about policymaking, transparency, and public trust. When the same sector regulated by a minister is also linked to his family’s businesses, it creates perceptions of bias — even if no legal wrongdoing is proven. At the same time, the ethanol blending policy has environmental benefits and could reduce India’s oil imports significantly. Balancing these goals with transparency remains the real challenge.
