H-1B Visa Fees - Past Costs vs. 2025 Hike Explained

H-1B Visa Fee: How Much Was It Before and Why Has It Become So Expensive Now?

In the United States, the H-1B visa has always been the most important gateway for Indian professionals and tech companies. Millions of people connected to engineering, IT, finance, and research depend on this visa to work in the US. But recently, a major change shocked everyone.

What Was the H-1B Fee Earlier?

If you look at the older system, the H-1B visa was never this expensive. It included several smaller fees, and the total expense reached around $5,000 to $10,000.

• Base filing fee was just $460, paid with every application.

• Training fee was $750 for smaller companies and $1,500 for bigger ones.

• Fraud prevention and detection fee was $500.

• If a company had more than half of its employees on H-1B or L-1 visas, then an additional $4,000 fee applied.

• Premium processing could be opted for at $2,500.

• Lawyer charges and paperwork cost added a few more thousand dollars.

The most important thing was that all these fees were one-time payments, meaning they had to be paid only at the time of application or renewal. There was no heavy annual burden.

What Does the New Rule Say?

From September 2025, the Trump administration has implemented a new order. Under this, H-1B visa holders will have to pay an extra annual fee of $100,000 every year. This means companies will now need to bear this huge expense every year to retain their H-1B employees.

Why Are Companies Worried?

Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and JPMorgan immediately sent emails to their employees, advising those outside the US to return within 24 hours. The reason: if employees re-enter the US after the new rule takes effect, companies will be forced to pay the annual fee.

In such a situation, even short business trips or family vacations abroad could turn into a massive yearly burden for employers.

What Will Be the Impact on Employees?

This change will directly affect millions of people working in the US on H-1B visas:

• Going abroad for vacations or family visits will now become risky.

• Companies may hesitate to bear such huge annual expenses, which could affect jobs.

• In the long run, firms may prefer hiring local employees to avoid this burden.

Conclusion

Earlier, the H-1B visa was financially manageable for both companies and employees. But now, the extra $100,000 annual fee could prove to be a game-changer. It has created new challenges for Indian professionals working in the US as well as the companies employing them.
