Introduction
The Bengal Files is the third and final installment of Vivek Agnihotri’s “Files Trilogy,” after The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The film attempts to bring forward forgotten or suppressed chapters of Bengal’s history, particularly the Direct Action Day of 1946 and the Noakhali riots. With a runtime of 204 minutes and an “A” (Adults Only) certificate, the movie has attracted both attention and controversy.
Review – Strengths
• Performances: Actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi deliver impactful performances, making the emotional content believable and hard-hitting.
• Historical Depth: The film highlights stories of suffering that many Indians are not familiar with, thereby opening debates on how history has been written and remembered.
• Emotional Connection: Several sequences succeed in connecting audiences emotionally, leaving viewers shaken by the brutality depicted.
Review – Weaknesses
• Length and Pacing: At over three hours, the film feels stretched. Repetitive sequences dilute its impact.
• Graphic Violence: Excessive portrayal of brutality is disturbing for many viewers, leading to criticism that shock value is given more importance than subtle storytelling.
• Controversy: Critics accuse the film of being biased and politically motivated, presenting complex history in a one-sided manner. This has also caused protests and bans in certain regions.
Revenue and Box Office Performance
• Budget: Estimated between ₹30–50 crore.
Opening Day Collection: Around ₹1.75 crore in India.
Weekend Performance: Grew modestly with collections near ₹2.25 crore on Day 2 and ₹2.75 crore on Day 3.
Weekdays: Decline began, with collections dropping to the ₹1–1.3 crore range.
Total (First 6 Days): Approximately ₹10.2 crore in India net.
• Worldwide Gross: Also around ₹10 crore after the first week.
Given the high budget, these numbers suggest the film is struggling to reach break-even. Compared to The Kashmir Files, which became a blockbuster, The Bengal Files has shown a far weaker box office trajectory.
Verdict
The Bengal Files is a film that combines ambition with controversy. While it succeeds in bringing painful chapters of Bengal’s past to the mainstream and delivers strong performances, its excessive length, graphic imagery, and polarized narrative limit its commercial success. Financially, with collections at around ₹10 crore against a ₹30–50 crore budget, it is unlikely to become a hit unless it enjoys a long run or strong digital/OTT sales.
