In the recent joint press conference of Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, the stage looked more symbolic than substantial. Zelensky appeared almost like a side presence, while Trump dominated the microphone, steering the conversation toward his domestic political battles — from Washington D.C. politics, mail-in ballots, and Joe Biden, to the American media that constantly criticizes him.
Trump briefly mentioned Vladimir Putin and insisted he had never used the word “ceasefire.” He expressed frustration that the media portrayed him as a loser because “Putin came to Alaska,” yet maintained that he was doing everything possible to stop the killings in Ukraine. Interestingly, while claiming to work for peace, Trump simultaneously highlighted that he was selling weapons to both NATO and Ukraine.
At one point, Trump echoed Putin’s rhetoric, holding Biden responsible for the war and even hinted toward Zelensky — who, according to Trump, nodded in agreement. When asked about elections in Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized his desire for fair elections, but Trump quickly interjected: “How can you have both — a war and elections — at the same time?”
Perhaps the most striking moment came when Trump concluded by saying, “I love Ukrainian people, and I love Russian people as well.” This statement reflected his balancing act — trying to portray himself as a peace-seeker even while facing a collapsing image in both American and international media.
Overall, the press conference was less about Ukraine’s war and more about Trump’s attempt to safeguard his reputation at home and abroad.
