Global Leaders Back Peace, Spotlight on Trump–Zelensky–Putin Trilateral

After nearly two hours of intense discussions, six top European leaders joined Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump at a roundtable meeting. Present were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
All leaders struck a similar note — they want peace. A possible trilateral dialogue between Trump, Zelensky, and Putin has now emerged as the next big move. The central idea under discussion: providing a security guarantee to Ukraine.
But this guarantee opens up critical questions. Will it be similar to America’s security umbrella over Japan after Hiroshima?
1. Will Russia itself offer Ukraine a security guarantee?
2. Will America provide the guarantee while the EU takes a step back?
3. Will the EU and NATO collectively secure Ukraine?
Of these, the second and third options seem unacceptable to Putin, who has always opposed EU or NATO interference near Russia’s borders. Yet, Moscow may be willing to give security guarantees itself — not for Ukraine’s safety, but to weaken Zelensky politically, paving the way for a Kremlin-friendly face in Kyiv after the next elections.
Trump, meanwhile, did not miss the chance to praise himself — boasting that he “stopped the war between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda after 30 years,” almost positioning himself as a self-made candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. The other leaders, too, applauded his role.
Now, the world’s attention shifts to the anticipated trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelensky, and Putin. The outcome could reshape the global balance.
For India, the developments carry two positive signals. First, the tariff war with the U.S. shows signs of easing. Second, India has proven its boldness by continuing open trade with Russia despite Trump’s threats, showing the world that it can handle global pressure and act on its own strengths rather than hiding in America’s shadow.
