What is CPR? Understanding the Life-Saving Technique
In medical emergencies, every second matters. One of the most critical techniques known worldwide for saving lives during sudden cardiac arrest is CPR – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a simple yet powerful procedure that anyone can learn, and it can mean the difference between life and death.
What Does CPR Mean?
The full form of CPR is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
• Cardio refers to the heart.
• Pulmonary refers to the lungs.
• Resuscitation means reviving someone from unconsciousness or apparent death.
Together, CPR is a method to manually pump blood and provide oxygen when a person’s heart and breathing stop.
When is CPR Needed?
CPR is performed in situations like:
• Sudden cardiac arrest
• Drowning
• Choking
• Heart attack leading to collapse
• Electrocution or other accidents where breathing stops
If not started immediately, the brain can suffer permanent damage within 4–6 minutes of oxygen deprivation. That is why CPR is taught as a critical first-aid skill.
How is CPR Performed?
The basic steps of CPR are:
1. Check responsiveness – Tap the person and see if they respond.
2. Call for help – Dial emergency services immediately.
3. Chest Compressions – Push hard and fast at the center of the chest (100–120 compressions per minute).
4. Rescue Breaths (optional if trained) – After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths by sealing your mouth over theirs and blowing air into the lungs.
5. Continue CPR until professional help arrives or the person regains breathing/pulse.
Note: Hands-only CPR (just compressions without rescue breaths) is highly recommended for untrained bystanders.
Why CPR is Important
• Increases chances of survival by 2–3 times in cardiac arrest cases.
• Can be performed by anyone, anywhere — at home, workplace, or public places.
• Makes the difference between life and death before medical professionals arrive.
