Why Is BSE Listed on NSE but NSE Is Not Listed Anywhere?
It’s one of the biggest ironies of the Indian stock market —
BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) is listed on NSE, but NSE (National Stock Exchange) is still not listed on any stock exchange, including itself.
So why can an exchange list another exchange, but not itself?
Let’s understand this clearly.
1. BSE Is Listed — NSE Is Not. Why the Difference?
BSE was listed in 2017 on the National Stock Exchange. Investors can freely buy BSE shares just like any other company.
But NSE, even though it is more profitable, larger, and technologically superior, remains unlisted.
2. Why Is NSE Still Not Listed?
There are three key reasons:
• SEBI Investigations & Legal Cases
NSE was involved in regulatory controversies like the co-location scam. SEBI clearly stated — no listing until all investigations and court cases are resolved.
• Conflict of Interest
If NSE lists itself on NSE, then who will regulate it?
• NSE making rules for itself
• NSE monitoring itself
• NSE penalizing itself (if something goes wrong)
This becomes a direct conflict of interest, which SEBI does not allow.
• Regulatory Approval Required
Even if NSE wants to go public, it cannot do so without clearance from SEBI, Finance Ministry, and key shareholders. This approval has not come yet.
3. So How Is BSE Listed Without Problems?
Because BSE:
• Had no large regulatory cases pending
• Got SEBI’s clean approval
• Listed on another exchange (NSE), so there is no self-monitoring issue
• Complied with all corporate governance norms
4. Can NSE Ever Be Listed on NSE or BSE?
Yes, but only after:
• All legal cases are closed
• SEBI gives final approval
• Independent regulatory systems are in place to avoid conflict
So the answer is: NSE wants to list. Investors want NSE shares. But timing depends on legal clearance and regulatory permission.
Final Thought
BSE being listed on NSE shows transparency in India’s financial system.
But NSE not being listed yet shows that size and success do not mean exemption from regulation.
Once NSE gets a clean legal status, it could become one of the biggest IPOs in India’s history.
